Dancers and Musicians of Bhutan

The Royal Dancers of and Musicians of Bhutan documents Tsechu, the annual festival of Bhutan. Tsechu is part high mass, part morality play and part picnic. Villagers travel miles on foot to attend the three-day event where monks and lay male dancers perform pieces – some dating back to the eighth century. These performances bless the populace, point out the virtues of being good and transform complicated doctrine into simple visual stories. The film takes the viewer inside the Tashichlo Dzong, the administration center of the Kingdom where the festival is held. It also offers glimpses of Thimphu the capital of Bhutan and the surrounding countryside.
